What's Open, What's Closed During the New Year's Holiday

New Year's Day is an official federal holiday.

January 1 is New Year's Day. State and local government offices are closed and mail will not be delivered, but some businesses are open. Because the holiday falls on a Sunday, state and local offices will be closed Monday, January 2. For most Federal employees, Monday, January 2, will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes as well.

  • Simsbury Town Hall: closed Jan. 2
  • Simsbury Public Library: closed Dec. 31, Jan.1, Jan. 2
  • Simsbury Public Schools: closed – Jan. 2
  • Banks: closed Jan. 2
  • U.S. Post Offices: closed Jan. 2
  • State government offices: closed Jan. 2
  • State courts: closed Jan. 2
  • Liquor stores:
  • New Year’s Eve, Saturday, 12/31: Liquor stores and grocery stores with beer permits may sell during normal hours. Bars, restaurants and cafes may serve until 3 a.m. 1/1
  • New Year’s Day, Sunday 1/1 and Monday 1/2: Package stores closed both days, grocery stores may be open but the sale of beer is prohibited.
  • New Year’s Day, Sunday 1/1: Restaurants, bars, cafes, casinos (food must be available) may serve as permit allows for normal operation.
  • Supermarkets: many open, check hours
  • Retail stores, restaurants: many open, check hours

The Department of Motor Vehicles customer service centers will close for the New Year’s Day holiday on Friday, December 30, at 12:30 p.m. and reopen Tuesday, January 3, at 7:45 a.m. Major DMV service offices will be open on Thursday until 5:30 p.m. AAA offices in Avon, Cromwell, Enfield, Manchester, Old Saybrook, Plainville, Waterford and West Hartford will be open to process driver’s license renewals during their normal business hours on Saturday, December 31. 

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP)  announced that all of its administrative offices and state park museums will be closed on Monday, January 2, as a result of a state holiday. While DEEP business office locations will be closed, state parks will be open in accordance with their normal schedule. DEEP administrative offices that will be closed both dates include:
