A Little Help from Friends

Several groups make significant donations that will help Simsbury students.

Support for ice hockey. iPads at . A scholarship for those who have overcome a challenge.

Last week the board of education accepted gifts in all three of these areas. (It is board policy that the board needs to approve any gift given to the school system that exceeds $1,500.)

The Friends of Simsbury Hockey continues its supports of the high school ice hockey program (both boys and girls) with a donation of $7,500 to maintain and enhance the program.

The parent-teacher organization at Squadron Line also continues its supports with a gift of $5,061.46 for the purchase of classroom/instructional materials requested by teachers to supplement their classroom environment and four iPads for teachers to pilot education applications in the classroom.

Finally, a new scholarship will be offered to the class of 2012. CIGNA would like to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther Kind Jr. by awarding an annual $1,000 scholarship to one student who has overcome personal challenges and is providing service that has an impact on the community at large.

If there is not a student who meets the criteria, the scholarship will not be awarded.

The check will be disbursed directly from CIGNA to a college or university.

This comes on the heels of CIGNA announcing it was giving $20,000 toward the effort of high school students to build a memorial to Martin Luther King Jr. Last year was the debut of a documentary on King that many high school students helped create. The documentary is about the time King spent in Simsbury.
