These students are something special.

The Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents' awards were handed out at the board of education’s meeting on Nov. 8. The awards are given to a junior high and a high school student.

From the recipient was Kevin Kearns.

"He is every example of the HJ way," said Principal Sue Homrok-Lemke, referring to the school's mission statement that emphasizes connections, challenge and character.

Kevin is a member of the school's leadership academy, which means he is an ambassador for the school and was helpful at the open house and summer orientation.

Homrok-Lemke described Kevin as s "frequent flier" on the school's honor roll and said he reaches out to his peers and helps out in class.

In addition to academics, Kevin is an accomplished musician (he likes piano the best) and an athlete. He is involved with golf and is a runner.

"Thank you very much," said Kevin, adding that he was surprised he received the award as he was just going about his everyday business.
