CAPSS Student Recognition

These students are something special.

The Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents' awards were handed out at the board of education’s meeting on Nov. 8. The awards are given to a junior high and a high school student.

From the recipient was Erika Sloan.

Principal Neil Sullivan said Erika is continually challenging herself throughout her high school career.

She is a Simsbury Scholar, meaning she is in the top 5 percent of the students in the class, and Sullivan added she is in the top of that percentage itself. She was one of eight National Merit Semi Finalists at the high school and in Connecticut that means she is in the top half of 1 percent of all students who take the AP exams.

In her extracurricular activities she started the Aviation Club at the high school after taking aerospace and aviation classes.

“I’ve always loved flying,” said Erika, who hopes to one day get her private pilot’s license.

She was elected by her peers to be president of the National Honor Society and is also a member of the crew team. Her family started the group Kids for Paws that helps out families who need food to take care of the pets.

And she is one of the “nicest people you're ever going to meet,” said Sullivan.
