Scholarships Honor Legacy of Peters, Bannan, Hoppi and Others

Tuesday night the Board of Education approved scholarships that honor the legacy of late educators and others.

One is the Patricia H. Peters Memorial Scholarship. Peters spent more than 30 years as an educator in Simsbury, including some 18 as vice principal of Henry James Memorial School.

The scholarship will award $2,000 to two seniors pursuing a field in education.

"During her career, Ms. Peters touched the lives of thousands of students, supporting them in good times and bad and encouraging them to be the best that they could be," Superintendent Matthew T. Curtis, noted in a memo to the board.

Another scholarship is the Ban-Hopp-Gee Memorial Scholarship, which honors the legacy of the late John (Jack) Bannan, Simsbury farmer Walter Hoppi and members of the McGee family. The $500 scholarship will go to a person interested in "blue collar" jobs such as a trade or farming.
