Simsbury High School Athletics Program Recognized for Excellence

School wins award for the 11th time.

(SHS) has been awarded the Michaels Achievement Cup for athletic accomplishments during the 2010-2011 school year. The announcement was made at the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) Sportsmanship Summit luncheon at the Aqua Turf in Southington in September. This marks the seventh time in 11 years that Simsbury High School has won this prestigious award.

Since 1985, the CIAC-sponsored Michaels Achievement Cup has been awarded to Connecticut high schools for “overall excellence in high school athletics.” It takes into consideration academic success, equitable opportunities, trained and professional personnel, chemical-free programs and environment, athletic achievement, and a clear sense of sportsmanship marked by high ethical and moral standards.

Simsbury is considered the largest high school athletic program in the State of Connecticut and the second largest in New England, based upon the total number of programs offered and overall participation each year. Last year, there were 1,728 participants over the course of the three seasons, representing 35 varsity sports and 78 teams.

Athletics Director John Domaingue commented, “Our program success over the years is attributed to a supportive community and school department that embraces the importance of offering a comprehensive interscholastic program. This along with excellent coaches working with the simply the smartest and most talented student athletes in the state make us a tough program to beat.”
