Squadron Line Has Smoke But No Fire

By Kerry Jones, principal

At 9:38 a.m. Tuesday, students and staff evacuated from Squadron Line Elementary School due to smoke in the ramp hallway.

Most students were able to get their coats before exiting the building. The fire department arrived promptly and determined with the maintenance staff that smoke originated from an overheated blower motor in a radiator.

There was no fire and the motor was replaced but the area required ventilation before students could enter that part of the building.

Primary grade students as well as students without coats were able to enter the cafeteria by around 10 a.m. with upper grades students moving to the gym before we received the “all clear” to enter all floors of the building by about 10:15 a.m.  Buses from Salters were on the way to school in the event the situation was not quickly resolved.

The students did an excellent job following directions and staying calm during this unanticipated situation this morning. School is back in session this morning.
