Harsh Dose of Football Reality; Girls Make the Most of Rough Waters in Middletown

SImsbury Sports Digest for 10/18/2011

A one dimensional offensive strategy can only get you so far on the high school gridiron. Simsbury learned that lesson the hard way Friday night in a 45-0 thrashing at the hands of Windsor. Since the loss of their 1st and 2nd string quarterbacks to season ending injuries earlier this season, the Trojans (2-3) have been snapping the ball directly to their running backs in a "wild cat" style attack. It worked against South Windsor, but against the Warriors (5-0)... not so much. It also did not help that the high powered Windsor offense could move the ball at will against the trojan defense. The only area Simsbury performed well was special teams as they blocked a number of extra points and had some pretty good kick returns. Please click the link below for the full game story.

Meanwhile, it was a crazy day for Simsbury Crew at the Head of the Connecticut Regatta in Middletown on Sunday. The girls came in fifth out of fifteen competitors. That was before high winds and debris forced the cancellation of all boys high school events. By midday, several boats, including one boat from Avon and one from Villanova, had been swamped by waves with white caps, and rescue boats had to pull rowers from their boats and tow the empty shells back to the dock. Late afternoon college races were held, but several colleges elected to not race for safety reasons.

In other sports the Simsbury Volleyball team lost for just the 3rd time this season on Friday 3-1 to Platt in Meriden on Friday. The loss drops the Trojans record to 9-3.
