Quick Turn-Around In the Mud for One Team, While the Season Ends for Another

Simsbury sports digest for Nov. 18, 2011

Weather was certainly a factor in Wednesday's football game in Southington, but the schedule certainly didn't help. Simsbury (3-6) was looking to build on last Friday's rout of East Hartford as they battled the Blue Knights, hoping to inch closer to a 500 record. But a rare mid week contest gave Simsbury a short week to prepare. The result was a 14-8 defeat for the Trojans in a rain soaked, muddy, affair.

Things started off well for Simsbury as they built an 8-6 half-time lead on the strength of a 21 yard touchdown run by Christian Martinez. Martinez had another solid game as he rushed for 126 yards on 21 carries. But, Southington took control in the 2nd half, notching the go ahead score with less than 2 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. A potential game-tying 4th quarter drive stalled on the 27 yard line with just over 8 minutes to go as the Trojans turned the ball over on downs. Click on the link below for photos of the game:

The news was not much better for the Simsbury boys soccer team as they bowed out of the Class LL playoffs, falling to Trumbull 2-1. Still the Trojans (11-3-3) had a very solid season.

Finally, the boys and girls cross country teams capped off their seasons in fine fashion last month. Kevin Stanko and Sarah Mattison were the top runners for their teams, finishing in 6th and 10th places respectively. Both teams had 4th place finishes in the Class LL championship meet at Wickham Park in Manchester on Saturday October 29. If that date sounds familiar to you, it should, it is the same day of that freakish fall snowstorm that dumped over a foot of snow on us and stopped life as we know it for more than a week. Here is coverage of that event it you missed it: http://patch.com/A-nstK
