A Tough Test Awaits on the Gridiron; Winning Streak Snapped on the Hockey Field

Simsbury sports digest for Oct. 14, 2011.

If the Simsbury football team wants to win back to back games for the first time this season they will have to figure out a way to slow down a Windsor attack that has averaged over 400 yards of total offense through their first four games. The Warriors (4-0) are led by junior quarterback Robert Fleeting who has already thrown for over a thousand yards in this young season. The Trojans (2-2) on the other hand are all about the running game. Since losing their 1st and 2nd string quarterbacks to season ending injuries in the first two games of the season, Simsbury has been snapping the ball directly to the running backs. Last week the strategy worked for 4 rushing touchdowns from 4 different backs, Blair Zentek, Cormack Mulshine, Christian Martinez and Stephon King. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. Friday.

Also on today's schedule ... Simsbury soccer battles Newington. The girls are away at 3:45 p.m. The boys who are home at 3:45 p.m., are coming off a big 1-0 win against local rival Conard on Wednesday. Ryan Ahrens scored the game's lone goal on a corner kick. Goalie David McDonald had three saves as part of a strong defensive effort for Simsbury (7-2-1) led by captain Andrew Yanik.

Also in action today is the volleyball team who travels to Platt for a 6 p.m. start. The Trojans (9-2) rolled over Newington three games to none, 25-16, 25-17, and 25-19. Laura Yablecki led the way with 11 kills, 11 digs, and 5 blocks. Allie Davis chipped in 6 kills, while Carly Williams served 5 aces.

In other results ... the field hockey team saw its four game winning streak come to an end in a 4-2 loss at Farmington on Wednesday. The Trojans (6-2) had goals from Jamie Matson and Ari Arciero, while Audrey Allen had an assist.

Finally the Simsbury crew team will look to build off its strong performance in the New Englands last weekend when they travel to Middletown Sunday for the Head of Connecticut Regatta.
