Another Hill for the Football Team to Climb ... While Rowers Try Not to Get Spooked

Simsbury sports digest for Oct. 28, 2011

Overcoming adversity has been the theme of this football season for Simsbury. In the first game of the season the Trojans (2-4) lost their starting quarterback to a season-ending knee injury, only to rally back to beat Newington. In the second game of the year, Simsbury lost its second-string quarterback to a season-ending collarbone fracture. Despite falling to Conard in that contest, the Trojans showed character. The following week they topped South Windsor. Tonight they face a challenge once again as they host New Britain at 7 p.m., trying to snap a two-game losing streak. On paper the Golden Hurricanes (3-3) look like a better match-up for Simsbury. But one of those 3 wins came against Hall, who dispatched Simsbury last Saturday.

Meanwhile, fresh off a very successful Head of the Charles, the Simsbury rowers will be in Farmington for the Halloween Regatta Saturday. After rowing in an event with thousands of participants last weekend, the event known as the Head of the Pumpkin will have a much more intimate feel to it as the Trojans battle just Farmington and Avon.

The volleyball team has lost only five times in 17 tries this season. Two of those defeats have come at the hands of Southington, who has only one loss. Wednesday the Trojans (12-5) fell to the Blue Knights 3-0, just as they did last month. Simsbury will need to turn the page quickly as they play host to Farmington tonight at 5 p.m. The Indians also took down Simsbury earlier this season by a 3-0 score.
