Leading by Example in Season's First Win

Simsbury sports digest for December 14, 2011.

When a team is struggling, the members of that team look to the leaders to set the tone. Some use speeches others let their play do the talking for them. Tuesday night Taylor Perry delivered the latter as the Simsbury girls basketball team notched its first win of the season 47-34 over Bristol Central. The senior co-captain poured in a game high 24 points along with 3 assists and 4 steals to help the Trojans (1-2) snap a 2 game losing streak to start the season. The defense was also strong in this one as Simsbury hit the boards with Kelsey Moon grabbing 6 rebounds, while Nicky Rounseville and Katie Martensen had 5 each. Getting contributions from everyone was key in this one for first year coach Jessica Baker: "We are making strides in the right direction and are beginning to gel as a team." Allie Davis also chipped in with 5 assists for the Trojans who look to make it 2 in a row Friday when they play host to Platt at 7 p.m.

The boys meanwhile play their official season opener tonight, also at home, also against Platt at 7 p.m. After a 2010-2011 season which featured a state playoff berth, the Trojans are hoping to find their way back to the post season in 2011-2012.

Elsewhere on the schedule the Simsbury wrestlers will open their season with a trip to Bristol Central. Start time is 6 p.m. for the Trojans who open another season expecting to contend for conference and state titles.
