New Year Not So Happy for Simsbury Sports

Sports digest for January, 6, 2012.

After a very promising start, the Simsbury girls basketball team hit a bit of a wall this week. The Trojans (5-4) dropped consecutive games for the first time since the start of the season, Newington snapped Simsbury's 5 game win streak 50-29 on Tuesday despite a double-double from sophomore Allie Davis who had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Then Davis and Co. fell to Hall 55-44 last night. The sophomore sensation once again was all over the floor in the losing effort with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Nicky Rounseville also contributed with 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals while Taylor Perry had 10 points and 3 steals. "It was a hard fought game ... we just ran out of steam in the 4th quarter," said coach Jessica Baker. It doesn't get any easier for Simsbury who will take on New Britain (away on Monday) and Northwest Catholic (home on Thursday) next week.

The boys basketball team struggled as well in their first game after Christmas break, falling to Newington 58-45 on Tuesday. But they bounced back nicely last night, halting Hall 49-40. This game illustrated the importance of one of the oldest basketball adages in the book, making your free throws. Simsbury outscored Hall 18-8 from the charity stripe including a perfect 10 for 10 from Jake Downing who had a game high total of 19 points. Jeff Smith chipped in with 12 for the Trojans (5-2) who also battle New Britain (home Monday) and Northwest Catholic (away Thursday) next week.

It was a tough start to the new year for the wrestling team as well as they welcomed in Glastonbury to the friendly confines of Wednesday. The Tomohawks, though, made it a very long evening for the Trojans winning 42-28. Stephon King, Ben Durst, Ed Novak, and Christian Kaljulaid all won their matches for the Trojans. Kaljulaid won by pin while King won by forfeit. The other wins were by decision. Next up for Simsbury is the Fairfield Warde tournament on Saturday at 10 a.m.
