NHL Faceoff: Quick Vs. Bonino

Which former Avon Old Farms School hockey star's team will emerge victorious on Jan. 25...the L.A. Kings and Jonathan Quick or the Anaheim Ducks and Farmington's Nick Bonino?

Two former Avon Old Farms School teammates will faceoff against each other in an NHL matchup at Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium this weekend.

When Farmington native Nick Bonino, AOF Class of 2007, steps onto the ice Saturday as a center for the Anaheim Ducks, he'll have to think fast against the L.A. Kings who are armed with a goalkeeper who is Quick. Jonathan Quick, to be exact.

"I am really proud of Jon and Nick," John Gardner, Avon Old Farms hockey coach, said of his former players. "Nick, who is from Unionville, CT, has really been having a great year for the Anaheim Ducks while Jon Quick has already distinguished himself with the MVP- ConnSmyth Trophy and a Stanley Cup Championship in 2012."

Quick – a Hamden native and former Winged Beaver who graduated in 2005 from the all-boys preparatory school – is also going to be manning the goalposts for Team USA in Sochi, Japan for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

"It is a great honor to represent your country in the Olympics," Gardner said, adding that he's certain the AOF alumni "will bring credit to our school and our state." "I loved coaching them at Avon and am happy to say, they always come back and give back to the school that gave them a great opportunity."

The L.A. Kings play the Anaheim Ducks at 6:30 p.m. The game will air on CBC, NBCSN and RDS2.
