Putting a Bow on 2011 with Fall Accolades and Strong Play on the Hardwood

Simsbury sports digest for December 31, 2011

The winter high school sports season is well underway, but as we close out 2011, now is a good time to look back at what was a very successful fall sports campaign at . The Trojans had a stunning 26 athletes named to the all-conference squad in their respective sports. Nearly half came from the cross country team including Philip Brown, Jack Genovese, Joel Kirk, and Jefferson Wilkes. But one of their teammates earned honor as the most decorated Trojan this fall. Kevin Stanko was not only named All Conference, but All State and even All New England for his running prowess. As for the cross country girls, Sarah Mattison made the All Conference and All State teams. Tory Schuler, Joelle Ross, Laura Picard, Caitin Shaffer, and Claire Stuart joined Mattison with All Conference honors.

The field hockey team was well represented also with four players including, Madeline Nicholson, Arianna Arciero, Audrey Allen, and Kelly Knisel. Nicholson was also named to the All State squad.                 

Despite a down season for the football team, Eric Glynn, Stephon King, Brad Helmkamp, and Christian Kaljugaid received All Conference nods.

Matt Poomprakobs, Andrew Yanik, and Matt Juliano made All Conference for boys soccer, while Megan Hallworth and Kelly Ward did so for the girls team. Finally Laura Yablecki and Julia Dennen were selected All Conference in volleyball.

Meanwhile Simsbury basketball is off to a strong start this season. After losing their first two games of the season the Trojans (5-2) have reeled off five straight wins including a 61-48 win over Maloney in Meriden on Wednesday. Sophomore Allie Davis continued her fantastic play with 22 points, 14 of which came in the 2nd half when Simsbury took command. Davis also added 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Senior co-captain Taylor Perry poured in 19 points and added 3 steals.

The boys saw their three game winning streak end Wednesday as they lost a hard fought 56-50 contest against Granby Memorial. Still the Trojans are 3-1 on the young season.

The wrestling team finished 6th out of 10 teams as Simsbury played host to the Frank Chaves Invitational. Ben Durst took first place in the 113 pound weight class after winning an 8-2 decision. Two of the All Conference football players also had good meets. King won his consolation match of the 182 pound weight class, while Kaljugaid fell in the finals of the 285 pound division.
