Runners and Rowers Shined in Weekend Events; Others Back in Action After the Holiday

Simsbury sports digest for Oct. 12, 2011

Lake Quinsigamond near Worcester, Mass. was the site for the New England Scholastic Regional Crew Championships on Sunday. The Simsbury boys and girls crew teams had a strong showing. The Second Varsity Girls (Erika Sloan, Lydia Warters, Lizzy Austin, Laura Bushaw, Dezsaray Aponte, Jane Vinocur, Meredith Lincoln, Helen Moore and Marissa Klein, coxswain) finished first of the nine teams in their division. Simsbury First Varsity Boys, Second Varsity Boys and JV Boys each finished third in their respective divisions against as many as 13 regional competitors. The JV Girls boat finished second in their division, while the First Varsity Girls finished 5th. Simsbury's newest rowers raced for the first time in the Novice division.

Meanwhile, thousands of runners took to Wickham Park in Manchester for the Wickham Park Cross Country Invitational on Saturday. had a very good showing in both the boys and girls events. Kevin Stanko ran a sizzling 17:00 on the hilly 3.1 mile course. That was good enough for 9th place in the championship event which featured 102 runners. As a team the Trojan boys finished 5th out of 15 teams. Joel Kirk also ran a great race finishing 6 seconds behind Stanko in 13th place. The girls took 6th place out of 12 teams in their championship event on the strength of a 13th place finish from Sarah Mattison and a 17th place finish from Laura Piccard. The Simsbury runners were back at it Tuesday as they were at Winding Trails to take on Farmington.

Elsewhere on Tuesday's schedule ... Simsbury soccer was battling Conard. The girls were home while the boys were in West Hartford. Kick-off time for both was 3:45 p.m.
