Second Round of Playoffs for One Soccer Team, End of the Road for Another

Simsbury sports digest for Nov. 14, 2011

It's the goal of every high school varsity sports team when the season begins ... the state playoffs. Some teams hope just to qualify, while others want to make deep runs, and still others will only be satisfied with a state championship. That dream is still alive for the Simsbury boys soccer team as they will travel to Trumbull for a Class LL second round single elimination match-up with the Golden Eagles at 2 p.m. Monday. The Trojans (11-2-3) advanced past the first round on Friday with a 1-0 win over local rival Conard in penalty kicks (3-1.) David McDonald, Kevin Zwick and Andrew Yanik each netted their penalty tries. McDonald, though, was the big hero as he also played goalie for Simsbury keeping the Chieftains off the board for 100 minutes of play and allowing only one penalty kick goal. Sadly the dream did not make it out of the first round for the Simsbury girls soccer team. The Trojans (7-6-2) fell to Hall 3-1 on Thursday. Still a successful season as they did qualify for the tournament. Something 9 other Class LL teams were unable to do.

The State tournament (or any playoffs for that matter) are not in the Simsbury high football teams future. Still the 40-0 thumping they adminstered to East Hartford Friday had to feel very good. Christian Martinez ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. Andrew Girard also ran for 2 scores and Eric Glynn had 2 interceptions and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. In a season short-circuited by injuries to their top 2 quarterbacks in September, the Trojans (3-5) would do well to get back to .500, a tall order with Southington and Glastonbury still on the schedule.

In other action the field hockey team saw it's season come to a dissappointing end in the first round of the state tournament. The Trojans (9-4,) ranked 7th in the state, were shut-out by 10th seed Stamford 2-0 at home Thursday.

A similar fate befell the volleyball team as the Trojans (12-6) lost at home 3-1 to the higher seeded Norwich Free Academy on Thursday.
