Simsbury is Well Represented at Manchester

Simsbury sports digest for Nov. 25, 2011.

A beautifully crisp Thanksgiving morning was the setting for the 75th annual Manchester Road Race. For the second straight year officials capped registrations at 15,000.

Many Simsbury residents were among the nearly 13,500 finishers including two who won their age group. Bob McCusker was the first to finish in the male 55-59 year age group. The 59-year-old crossed the finish line at 28:30 which was also good enough for 194th place overall.

Lynette Walker was tops in the 70-74 year female division. The 71-year-old ran a sizzling 37:08 which put her in 1853rd place overall.

Thirteen-year-old Mary McNally and 14-year-old Aaron Rubin both of West Simsbury also had strong races finishing 34:19 and 33:20 respectively narrowly missing the podium in their age groups. All in all it was a very successful day for Simsbury runners. For further coverage of the days festivities please click the links below:

Meanwhile, Simsbury wrapped up their year on the gridiron Wednesday night falling to Glastonbury 40-14. The Trojans (3-7) were really up against it facing a Tomohawk team at home that was playing for a state playoff berth. Christian Martinez who really came on toward the end of the season, had another strong game in the losing effort with 123 yards and a touchdown on just 9 carries. Glastonbury did ultimately find its way into the 8th and final Class LL playoff spot edging Pomperaug in tie-breaker points. It may be a short stay for the Tomohawks though as they face undefeated top seed Xavier who has been ranked at or near the top of the state rankings all season.
