Simsbury Sports Digest for April 6

The spring high school sports season begins in earnest with a full slate of contests.

The juggernaut that is the Simsbury girls’ track and field team is looking for its 12th straight CCC league championship. The state class “L” runner ups return a strong contingent of throwers, hurdlers, jumpers, and racers.

Leading the Trojans is senior captain Julia Levesque, the indoor 55m hurdle runner up at the New England championships this past winter. Levesque will be chasing down an outdoor crown in the 100m hurdles. Joining Levesque will be captains Danielle Robbins, Erica Hendershot, Spencer Schloss, Natalie Valentin, and Traea Vaillancourt.

Stiff competition will come from Southington, Hall, Conard, and Farmington in the CCC West, with a date with Windsor, last year’s class “L” champion looming in June at the state meet. Simsbury gets it's season underway when they host Northwest Catholic at 3:45 p.m. today

The boys' track team also starts it's season today against Northwest Catholic at home at 3:45 p.m.

The baseball team also opens at home as they take on Weaver at 4:15 p.m. First year coach Dave Masters manages a team that returns quite a few players from last year's squad that finished 9-11, falling in the first round of the state tournament. Starting pitcher Matt Quintana joins Kyle Decker, Josh Gowdy, JR Phillips, Connor Martinez, and Dylan Sullivan. All six played for the Trojans in 2010. Sullivan, Philips, and Martinez look to help carry the load offensively.

Also on the schedule ... the girls golf team will travel to the links at Glastonbury Hills Country Club to take on the Tomahawks of Glastonbury high school at 3 p.m.

Girls' softball is home for Windsor at 3:45 p.m.

The boys lacrosse team will visit Joel Barlow at 5 p.m. It will be a late night for the Trojans after the three-hour round trip to Redding.
