Simsbury Sports Digest for May 4

Big wins for Simsbury on the diamond and the lax field.

Since a 3-0 start it has been an up and down season for the boys baseball team. Monday was up, in a big way, as the Trojans crushed Northwest Catholic 8-2. It was a critical win for Simsbury (6-5) because it was a conference win, their 2nd of the season. Pitcher Matt Quintana went the distance allowing just 3 hits and striking out 8. Jordan Radin, Dave Cap and JR Phillips all went 2 for 3 at the plate. Simsbury will host Farmington tonight at 6 p.m.

Meanwhile since starting their season 1-3 the boys lacrosse team has been on an absolute roll winning 7 straight including a 7-4 triumph at Guilford Monday. The Trojans (8-3) will battle Hall on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in West Hartford.

The girls lost a heartbreaker to Minnechaug 8-7 on Monday. The Trojans (4-3) were led by Tess MacKay with 5 goals. Grace McCann was stellar in the net with 13 saves. Simsbury is back at it today as they host South Windsor at 5:30 p.m.

The boys tennis team shut out Bristol Central yesterday 7-0. It was such a dominant performance, the Trojans (3-2) did not give up a set all day. Eduardo Rosadio won 6-1, 6-0. Wilco Carey, Sam Kyzivat, and Austin Dubois also won in straight sets. As did all 3 doubles teams... Justin Keppel and Ethan Kyzivat, Omesh Kamat and Colin Kirkland along with Will Donahue and Dan Brennan. Simsbury visits Conard at 3:45pm today.

Finally this past weekend the 16th annual River Run took place. We have been running photos from the race all week on Simsbury.patch.com. Some 600 runners took part in the event which included a kids one mile race, a 5k and a 10k. Your humble correspondent participated in the 10k. If the 10k course seemed a little long to you, as it did to me (then again all races seem long to me,) there is a reason for that. Shortly after the races began the fire department closed a portion of Terry's Plain road because of a tree hanging on a power line. River Run director Thomas York acted quickly and re-routed the race down Ferry Lane to Goodrich Lane back onto Terry's Plain. It added .12 miles, but allowed the race to continue with very little impact to the runners.
