Simsbury Sports Digest for May 6

Twice was nice in the first inning, while girls lax continues to roll.

The baseball team started off Thursday's game with a bang... actually 2 of them. Dylan Sullivan and Kyle Decker each hit 2-run home runs in the first inning as the Trojans foiled Farmington 5-2. Phil Carignan went the distance allowing just 3 hits, striking out 4 and walking only one. Simsbury (7-5) will look to make it 3 in a row as they host Bloomfield today at Memorial Park. First pitch is slated for 4:15 p.m.

A 3-game winning streak is just what the girls lacrosse team currently has after eking out a 7-6 win over South Windsor Wednesday in the rain. The Trojans (5-2) will look to stretch it to 4 when they host Southington tomorrow at 2 p.m.

The boys, meanwhile, are home for Hall today at 5:30 p.m.

The boys tennis team is home for South Windsor today at 3:45 p.m.

The Simsbury boys track team soundly beat Southington 102-48 Tuesday. This meet included seven State Qualifying performances. But, the highlight of the meet had to be Brian Eilers javelin throw of 202' 9", setting a new school record. Eilers also finished 2nd in the shot-put. All in all the Trojans won 13 of the 18 events contested. Nick Albergo and Stephon King had state qualifying (SQ) runs in the 100 meters. Joel Kirk lowered his SQ in the 1600 meters to 4:31, followed closely by Jack Genovese at 4:34 (SQ.) Eric Glynn  and Ryan Holowesko also qualified in the javelin, as did Dominic Gerardi in pole vault. The boys and girls squads will travel to Middeltown tomorrow at noon.

Finally, despite a standout performance from Ben Shelley, including 19 kills, 5 blocks, 12 digs, and 2 aces, the Simsbury boys volleyball team fell to Farmington 3 games to 1 Wednesday. The Trojans (3-6) will try to bounce back at Bulkeley today at 5 p.m.
