Rowers Successful in Boston; Another Tough Weekend for Football

Simsbury sports digest for Oct. 25, 2011

The Simsbury Crew’s First Varsity Girls finished in the elite top-half of the Youth Eights Division at The Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston on Sunday. They placed 33rd moving up 11 spots from their start position and over 20 spots better than last year. Because this result put the Trojans in the top half of the 75 team field, they are guaranteed entry into next year's race. It was also 3 spots ahead of Glastonbury the only other Connecticut high school team.

The Head of the Charles is the world’s largest and perhaps best known rowing regatta, which draws about 8,000 high school, club and collegiate athletes from dozens of countries and as many as 300,000 spectators. The three-mile course is known for its tight turns and narrow bridges, which make passing other boats at times a nail-biting endeavor.

Rowing on the 33rd place boat for Simsbury were Cate Murphy, Jess Collins, Carly Dale, Audrey Kelley, Kristen Oleskewicz, Mia Ciccaglione, Caroline Carr, Cate Beebe, and Jen Nichols, Coxswain with Coach Mark Raymond.

Despite keeping it close in the first half, the Simsbury High School Football team could not stay with Hall, falling 27-6 on Saturday afternoon in West Hartford. After the Warriors (5-1) built a 13-0 first half lead, Blair Zentek intercepted a pass and ran it back 26 yards for the Trojans (2-4.) Christian Martinez then ran it down the Hall 1 yard line before Andrew Girard plunged in for the lone Simsbury score. Click on the link below for the complete game story:

Meanwhile it was an up and down couple of days for the field hockey team. Simsbury lost to Hall 3-1 Monday. Audrey Allen scored the only Trojan goal. This was in sharp contrast to the 4-1 victory over Newington Friday. Kelly Knisel had 2 goals, while Allen and Sarah Chamberlain each had one.
