What better way to usher in the winter sports season than on the ice? The Simsbury girls hockey team opened its competitive season with a jamboree Friday night as teams from around the area gathered at the International Skating Center.
The Trojans hope to begin to erase the bitter taste of last season. One where despite compiling a stellar 17-6-2 overall record and winning the CCGHL championship, they fell well short of their own expectations.
Simsbury lost to Ridgefield in the state quarterfinals, after making it to the semi-finals a year earlier. At times during the season the Trojans looked ready to make that step to the title game, particularly when they knocked off Darien, the team that had eliminated them in the semis in 2010. But Ridgefield, who really seemed to have Simsbury's number, beating them in the regular season, also bounced them from the state tournament. The Tigers went on to defeat Darien in the semis before losing to the eventual champ New Canaan in the finals.

The season also starts on the hoops hardwood as the Simsbury boys travel to Canton for a 10 a.m. tip off Saturday. The Trojans will look to build on a season where, after a rough start, they played well down the stretch, and qualified for the state tournament. Like the ice hockey girls, though, Simsbury lost to Ridgefield in the opening round. The Tigers made a deep run, getting to the final four before falling to Fairfield Prep.
Finally, the wrestling team will visit Windham for a scrimmage also starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.
