Simsbury Special Olympians Compete in Triathlon

Athletes brought home gold and bronze medals.

Submitted release

Adding to a long list of “firsts” for our state, Connecticut held the first Unified Triathlon in the United States in North Haven, CT on Sunday, April 29.

Twelve teams from all over Connecticut competed in swimming, track and cycling. The teams consisted of two Special Olympians and one Unified partner with each athlete competing in one of the three events.

Simsbury Special Olympics sent two teams to the event with athletes from the track and swim teams and two scouts from Simsbury Troop 76 who also competed in the event.

Timothy Carr, Ryan Carr and Dan Skinner brought home the gold and Selina Derungs, Scott Masson and Rigby Michaelsen brought home bronze. The four athletes who competed in triathlon will again compete in track and swimming at the State Games held on June 8–12 at Southern Connecticut State University.

If you would like to volunteer for, or participate in, Special Olympics, contact Regional Coordinator Debbie Restaine at 860-992-6928.
