Updated Schedule for National Bike Month Released

Schedule includes nearly two dozen free events

Submitted by Bike Walk Simsbury

Simsbury is celebrating National Bike Month in May by hosting a packed agenda of exciting bicycle rides and activities – most of which are free – for all ages and skill levels, organized by Bike Walk Simsbury. Named in 2010 as the only Bicycle-Friendly Community in Connecticut by the League of American Bicyclists, Simsbury’s motto is “Everyone Rides.”

There are nearly two dozen free, bicycle rides scheduled during May that start or end in Simsbury, led by experienced riders from several cycling groups, non-profit organizations and a bicycle shop. Rides are both on-road and along the trail.

Kicking off National Bike Month on Tuesday, May 1, at 10 a.m., at Simsbury Town Hall, Simsbury First Selectman Mary Glassman will read a proclamation and announce Simsbury Town Hall as a “cycle center” for Simsbury Free Bike, a bike-share program.

Glassman also will discuss one-of-a-kind, Simsbury bike racks, designed by Simsbury metal-artist Vicente Garcia; new “Share-the-Road” signs; and “sharrows” that will be painted  along a 14-mile, on-road loop through town.

Other free May events include: A  Kids’ Bike Rodeo on May 6; a Mountain-Bike Stunt Show, also on May 6; an Adult/Teen Bike Education Class on May 8; an East Coast Greenway  Bike-To-Work Ride from Simsbury-Hartford on May 18, and the unveiling of the Simsbury Bike Sculpture on May 19, during ArtWalk Simbury!.

“We’re so proud of Simsbury’s bicycle-friendly status,” Glassman said. “The trail is a gem that we want to promote and share with cyclists of all ages and abilities.” More than eight miles of The Farmington Canal Heritage Trail/East Coast Greenway run through Simsbury from the Avon and Canton town lines.

“Simsbury also has lovely country roads and an historic town center,” Glassman added. “You don’t have to be an expert rider to hop on a bike, enjoy quality time with family and friends, and engage in healthy exercise.  It’s virtually free if you own your own bike. If not, you can borrow one through Simsbury Free Bike.”

“You can bring your children for a leisurely family ride along the Farmington Valley Greenway  or test your endurance on a 25-mile ride along the back roads of Simsbury,” she said. “Seasoned riders can attach their clips and ride 50-miles to Granville, MA, and back.
