Apply too early and you've lost the crabgrass prevention when needed, apply too late and the crabgrass will have already germinated. The best rule of thumb for your yard, is wait until the yellow forsythia bushes have come full bloom or even dropping its blooms. It's all about soil temperature, not air temperature when it comes to grass germination. Also, most crabgrass preventer + fertilizers need to be watered in before it becomes effective. Definitely read the entire label of the bag that you are applying to your lawn.
