Fiction Writer Ron Carlson to Give Westminster School Reading

 Fiction writer Ron Carlson will give a reading at Westminster School April 18 as a part of the school’s “Friday Nights in Gund,” a series of readings, lectures and concerts held at Westminster during the academic year that is underwritten in part by The Ensign Bickford Foundation. The student reader will be senior Mae Mullen whose story “Green Carnations” took first place in the English Department’s Short Story Writing Contest this year.

Carlson’s most recent novel, “Return to Oakpine,” was published in 2013.  His book on writing, “Ron Carlson Writes a Story,” was published in 2007. His short stories have appeared in The Best American Short Stories and dozens of other anthologies as well as Esquire, Harper’s and Ploughshares.  He has also written for The New York Times Book Review and the Los Angeles Times Book Review.  He has received numerous awards and honors including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Fiction, a National Society of Arts and Letters Award and the 1993 Ploughshares Cohen Prize.

Carlson’s Westminster School reading is free and open to the public and will begin at 7 p.m. in the Gund Reading Room of Westminster’s Armour Academic Center. The school is located at 995 Hopmeadow St. in Simsbury. Refreshments will be served after the presentation and ample parking will be available in the parking lot adjacent to the Armour Academic Center.
